Installing a Virtual Keyboard Chrome Extension on Chromium Linux Mint

Type passwords without touching the keyboard (daytime theme shown)

New Linux users might be skeptical and then surprised to learn that you can install a Google Chrome extension on the Chromium browser. They would be even more surprised to learn how easy it is. Sure, you could just install Chrome but that seems like an extra step that might not even be necessary. Simpler is better.

I have Linux Mint 19 on an encrypted and bootable USB drive because I am Privacy Paranoid. I want to install a virtual keyboard Chrome extension so that I do not have to type private information via the keyboard. This particular on-screen keyboard has some open source features that I like such as hover mode, input blur, and key scramble.

Simply fire up the Software Manager. Click the Mint icon in the lower left panel, select ALL then find Software Manager in the drop-down menu. Click Chromium-browser.

Linux Mint 19 Software Manager | Install Google Chromium — OR — sudo apt-get install chromium-browser Chromium

After you’ve successfully installed Chromium you can go to the Chrome Web Store and find any extensions that you like. The Arcanus Virtual Keyboard is here:

Type “chrome://extensions” to see and configure all your extensions.

Now you can boot Mint, fire Chromium and safely surf on any computer, even if it has a hardware keylogger. Use the in-browser keyboard on any bank, cryptocurrency, tax or shopping site.

Finally, if you would like to put the virtual keyboard on your own website visit NPMJS.org and install the free open-source package.

Keypad Encrypted USB Best Practices

Enter The PIN before inserting the USB into its slot. Do not enter the PIN while the Keypad Encrypted USB is connected.

Close all applications before hibernating, suspending, logging off or ejecting the USB device. This is an important step especially if you are using a software cryptocurrency wallet, KeePass or Key Quest Vault.

Put the USB Device back in its capsule when not in use. You should remember to seal the Capsule and store it in a safe place.

Make sure your are not being watched or recorded by a surveillance camera. Be aware of your surroundings and look behind you.

Do not plug the USB into a suspicious computer. Avoid using a computer that may be infected with Spyware. If you must use an unknown computer, boot from a Trusted Operating System, and use the Virtual Keyboard to enter passwords.

Do not use a found USB device. If a USB drive magically appears do not plug it into any computer. Curiosity killed that particular cat. Be cautious if your USB drive was out of your possession for any period of time.
